i think sun light helps alot and it also helps females combs stay small but the most important is genetics if your breeding birds are good and red than most of the offspring are red. mine line of blues stay red year round i just sun light to make sure the female combs stay small

Never heard of the sun keeping the comb small before. I know there are several factors involved in keeping the comb and face red. The sun is definitely one of them, but I have used grit (small decomposed granite) and it will help a pale face bird turn red. The pale face can be a sign of a parasite problem as well. If your birds are free of parasites I would start with the grit first especially if you have a bird you are trying to keep from changing color due to direct sunlight. This is what works for me, but like I said I am sure there are many other factors involved.
