Just depending on how big the pen is and how many birds are in it. I average about a month in between cleaning. Some reason the moderns and rosecombs we have are a little more messy than the old english. Theirs get cleaned a little more often.

I clean my pens every other week. They are 2x2 and 3x3s.
I use cotton seed hulls for bedding and I reuse the bedding in the cattle feed.

I have some 2X2 for individual birds and if litter is kept dry, they can go 6 weeks or more without cleaning. I use wood shavings and start thin and every couple weeks just add another inch or so layer and this works fine for me. Change it out and clean when litter is about2 1/2 to 3 inches thick.

I use wood shavings the small kind. When I clean my pens I use the bedding and chicken poop on my garden. Makes some great veggies!!!
