Has anyone used 55 gal plastic Drums as pens. Seen pics of some laid on side with door cut out on end, seems fairly economical but question is did you fill bottom with sand or put some sort a wood board on the bottom w/shavings to provide a flatter surface? Or just throw some shavings and let em go. I have a source that I can get them fairly cheap just wanted a lil input on maybe some perks or down falls others have had. Any input would be great Thanks in advance. Randal

I have a few that I use during the Fall and winter. I have both ends cut out with wire covering them, one being a door. They are too hot during the (texas) summer to have anything in them. I use sand in the bottom and cut a 2x8 and screwed it to the bottom for a roost. The feather quality stays good.

It looks like it would be hot on the birds in the summer time. Around here it gets in the 100s in the summer. I like it though.

This was setting where this picture was taken all summer with birds in it with temps as high as 109 and they had no trouble at all. The back is open like the front and the breeze blows through. I have the back tarped now for the winter but come spring I will remove it.
