TOPIC: Feeders in breeding pens

Feeders in breeding pens 5 years 8 months ago #4533

I have set up my breeding pens of trios, and was just wondering what everyone uses as feeders. I am using the 7 hole autofeeder variety, and the waste is unbelievable!! Anybody have any suggestions for less waste feeders in a small area?

Thanks!

I have found that any auto feeder setup to hold more than 1 feeding will have a considerable amount of waste. On my smaller breeding pens I use the hanging cup on the bigger ones I use rubber feed pans (like for swine, goats etc...). Only feed what they need for a day.

I have found that a milk jug works best for me. If you look on the side of a milk jug, there is usually a circle on the side. I cut the circle out along the edges. Then I take a piece of wafer board (bigger that the bottom of the milk jug)and screw the milk jug to it. Leave the top on the milk jug and put your feed in the hole that was cut out. My feed bill has decreased dramatically and my birds are in the best shape ever. My Birds cant pull the feed out and I hardly ever see any waste.

I just cut a round hole in a gallon milk jug and fill it with feed. It will last a trio for several days and there is little waste. If it gets too dirty, I just throw it away and put in a new one. I use the same jugs foe waterers too. Works great and costs nothing.

My breeders are either on ground or solid floor cages so spilling is not any real problem. If the scratch it out of the container then they gotta work a little harder for it by scratching for the stuff they spill. Good excersize for them anyway.

PVC FEEDER:

Feeder made from 2 inch pvc. The main barrel is 5 foot long. The Y at the bottom is connected using an inch and a half piece of 2 inch pvc. A cap with holes drilled in it is on the bottom. The holes let the fines drop out. A cap on top to finish it out. Holds about 2 scoops or 6 quarts of the smaller pellets.

Guys, I use a larger diameter pipe but my deer feders are of the same design as that. Gravity feed and holds enough feed for a few days. They wok great in the dog kennels also mounted outside of the pen and you do not have to go in the pen to feed.
