I used wood shavings for my Langshan bantams, what litter would you recommend for the old english? I have heard that some folks use play sand in their pens.

What size of breeding pens do folks utilize for Old ENglish?

I use wood shavings or hay and preferable alfalfa hay. I have heard some use the sand and take a kitty litter scoop to clean the sand. My favorite is just good old mother earth (dirt). I have several sizes of pens. I start my chicks off in the brooder (galvanized horse trough) then after a couple weeks I move them to a 8x8 pen with a heat lamp. I have small pens that are about 3ftx3ftx2ft for single matting and larger 8ft long 3ft wide 6ft tall for up to 3 hens and a rooster. I have just recently made some conditioning pens for a single bird that are about 5ft long 30 inches wide and about 4 ft tall. I have several other small pens for pairs or single birds and I am always on the look out for a better setup. This is what I have now lets hear what everyone else has.

I use sand. Dirt, on lighter colored birds, is a lot harder to clean off. It tends to stain somewhat also, especially if their is any clay in the soil. Shavings I use too, but they seem to dirty quicker.

I am thinking to using "play sand" on my selfblues. I have 2 pens of them. Hatching eggs slowly coming from them. Thanks again.

QUESTION - I see pics of small indoor pens stacked on top of each other with wood shavings etc. --- Is it ok to keep the OE's in such pens year round?? How does this set up work? Just curious

So those are just breeder pens, where the conditioning really doesn't matter so much, I guess?

Can you post a picture of the pens you are talking about. I'm guessing you are talking about show coops but I am not 100% sure.

No, not show coops. Just small pens (like 2'x2' or 3'x3' sizes, I guess) with wood floors ......

Many people do keep them in there year round but it's best to rotating them outside to get some sun and green grass.

Marvin roach had some pictures of his. I believe they are made to have pens 2 or 3 high and the individual pens are probably 2x2, with slide out bottoms for ease of cleaning. Maybe he will post the pics here for you.
